I am a geographer at Syracuse University (New York, USA). My research and teaching revolve around the relationship between people and their environments, with an emphasis on questions of social justice and political economy. In particular, my scholarship explores how rural peoples and their organizations access, manage, struggle over, and organize themselves in relation to nature and natural resources in the central Andes and western Amazon in South America. I received my PhD from the University of Colorado in 2000, where my dissertation research focused on political organizing and rural livelihoods among Kichwa indigenous peoples in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Since 2002 my research has mostly focused on the political ecologies of resource governance in Bolivia, particularly in the areas of water, mining, and pastoralism. Full CV.
